First engineer on the team that designed and built a complete web infrastructure for two major hospitals and associated clinics from the ground up. Our group was responsible for all web services at Stanford University Medical Center for the first few years, and provided the same for Menlo Medical Clinic and affiliated programs. Winner of 12 national awards through 2008, including “Best Overall Portals” in U.S., more than any other web team in the healthcare industry.

  • Principal architect of a secure and comprehensive web framework utilizing content management, publishing workflow, JEE, CGI, third party applications, and enterprise systems integration.
  • Responsible for enterprise data model and reference architecture.
  • Designed and built content integration mechanism between Interwoven Teamsite and IBM WebSphere.
  • Built a comprehensive physician directory, launched in May 2002. Adapted existing content templates to Perl CGI, later converted to Java. Data layer combined different source systems and transformed them into multiple organizational and community directories, including Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Stanford Hospital and Clinics, and Menlo Medical Clinic.
  • Co-developed with Cerner Corporation a web-based patient chart, the first such implementation using the Cerner EMR.
  • Principal engineer of the LPCH MDPortal (mdportal.lpch.org).



1998-2001 ∙ Software Engineer ∙ Design Matters

Leading provider of web-based solutions in Silicon Valley. Pioneered early use of enterprise web applications with comprehensive content management, publishing, and back-office integration.

Designed, built, and deployed what was for many clients their first enterprise web implementation. Used Vignette StoryServer, Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL, Broadvision iPlanet, CGI, and Microsoft ASP. Integrated web systems with SAP, Peoplesoft, LotusNotes, and proprietary legacy applications.

Clients: 3Com, Raychem, National Semiconductor, Robert Mondavi Wineries, DHL-USA, Airgas, e-Town.com, Bridge Bank of Silicon Valley, Hoefer and Arnette, Inc., Riffage.com, eSold.com, iFuse.com, Applied Materials, America Online (AOL), Fairchild Semiconductor, Hewlett Packard, Virtio, VeriFone, Marvell Semiconductor, Astaga.com, U.S. Air Force, City of San Carlos, State of California, National Cancer Institute, Broadvision, Inc., iVendor, Advance Paradigm, Inc., and Rooster Farms Coffee Company. Most of these core, business-critical applications are still in use.

 Project: Robert Mondavi Connect
Role: Principal engineer. Provided data model, application architecture, all server programming, data import tools, and production deployment.

Result: An innovative and secure sales Intranet with tools and facilities to provided instant, easy access to all areas of the business, fully cross-referenced from any point. In addition, management reporting and instant communication (from company-wide announcements to group strategy discussions) improved the effectiveness of Mondavi’s global sales force, providing unique advantages over competitors.

Project: DHL-USA
Role: First engineer on the project, and one of four when the team was complete. Participated in strategy, planning, programming, testing, and documentation.

Result:  Real-time status and location tracking of any package shipped by DHL worldwide, with a secure services channel for the Department of Defense. Intranet integration with enterprise business systems. A showcase of the power of enterprise web applications and foundation for sustained growth and innovation.

Project: Palm VII Developer Site
Role: Principal engineer. Everything from requirements gathering, data model, application design, programming, UI, interface to recommendation engine, and deployment.

Result: In what became a standard for handheld devices, this web site served as a searchable, categorized application repository. Initially for developers, it was opened to the public upon product launch.

Project: Design Matters’ internal applications
Contributed to Design Matters’ internal web applications (intranet and extranet), which won the Nielsen Norman Group’s “Intranet of the Year” award.

  • Programmed in C, FORTRAN, and UNIX shell scripting. Maintained scientific software such as LaTeX, AIPS, AIPS++, NCSA HTTPd, and Ingres
  • Implemented satellite data collection system for HALCA Project, in cooperation with NASA, ISAS, and ESA.
  • Contributed to NRAO web pages and applications, customized version control for scientific papers.
